Of course there are similarities in certain aspects, noone denies that. Just take it as an honour that one of the soon to be big bands was inspired by U2.
I could name you the same similarities between U2 and The Beatles, The Who, The Clash, The Prodigy, Joy Division, The Hives, Elvis, ... the list goes on and on. Did U2 copy all these bands?
And just a personal statement on their live shows to add: The 3 times that I've seen Coldplay live in concert were a better experience than any Post Popmart show I witnessed, the main difference is pretty simple:
When you're at a Coldplay gig, they transport the feeling that they love what they do. Something magic that U2 have had in the past, before they lost it. They don't have it anymore. They're doing their job. Let's hope that won't happen to Chris and the lads, too...
I'm gonna see them in Hamburg jut a few days before R.E.M., should be a nice week. Just a little heavy on the wallet.
Sounds great man. Enjoy. i'd like to see REM but i'm not prepared to make the 100 mile trip for it. At least Coldplay announced a few dates for up in the North here (but subsequently sold out quickly)

Partially agree with you, Vertigo really had a business-feeling over it. Zoo TV was probably the last tour where they really loved to play.
