Here's a place where you can express your admiration to one of the best U2 albums around - the highly underrated Zooropa, the boys' journey to the Dark Side!

I have to tell, that I first hated this LP with a passion when it came out back in 1993, I just didn't know what to do with it and sank it to the deepest pit of albums...and opened it again this year, 14 years later. What a shining diamond this album is!! I enjoyed every minute of it (well, nearly every minute, Babyface is still a weak tune), and it immediately received the 'classic' label, and catapulted to no 3 of my U2 album list (after R&H and AB). The atmosphere, the production and the songs themselves...the title track (has to be one of U2's finest moments ever), Numb, Lemon, Stay, SDABTO, Dirty Day, TFT, DGPFYCC, and the outstanding 'The Wanderer'...just got to love them all!

What do you like the most about the Zooropa album?

It's my next favourite after JT and AB - the rest are all a tied 3rd . Whatever mood I'm in, I stick it on and it takes me away...love it

Didn't it win a Grammy or something for "Alternative Album' or some such?
Seeing as U2 are nearly always noted in the 'Rock' category, I think that speaks volumes.

Edit:

Tema abierto por Wikipedia:
Zooropa was a successful release, riding the wave of popularity started by Achtung Baby and the Zoo TV Tour. It won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in the year of its release and spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200, despite lacking a strong single. It has subsequently sold 8 million copies worldwide.

I think it's a great cousin to AB, I remember first hearing it and loving it! During the title track i was just like 'what the fuck is this? this is great!' the songs are much better live as most are, but they all have special qualities that come through in any light. I really love the production on Stay, DGPFYCC is definitely better live but still fun on record, it just doesn't get any better than the Sydney or other gigs where they played it. Dirty Day, come on, what a guitar solo live! what a rocker. the album though, as Edge said has a lot of unfinished ideas just kind of floating around, and when i listen to it i can't help but feel the excitement they must have had, and the exhaustion, of recording it between gigs, it is among their best sonic adventures!

One of my favorite times is when the first single is released prior to the album, and you are left to wonder how the rest of the album compares. I vividly remember hearing The Fly before AB, and hearing people get nervous. In my circle, Numb was an outrage to all, but me. I'll never forget being sort of ganged up on having to defend its merits(As if I should have to). It was just the beginning of my love for Zooropa. I always have loved the weirdening of U2. Too me it was like when the Beatles all grew moustaches and did Strawberry Fields. Zooropa, Numb, Stay, and The First Time have remained among my favorites.

That tends to by my ranking too most of the time. I've always loved Zooropa as the wild rebellious, weird sister to AB. Lemon was my all-time favourite U2 track at one stage. Everyone at school when Z came out fell in love with it. From the haunting Zooropa opener to the beautiful Stay all the way down to Johnny Cash at the bottom. I'm glad they built on the EP concept and turned it into an album. And to record it in the middle of a tour is just absolutely incredible. It was well ahead of its time.

I love EVERTYTHING about it. It is the album where The Edge produced some VERY interesting non-guitar sounding guitar bits. Larry is dead solid. Listen to his solid snare rimshots on "Daddy's Gonna Pay..." BRILLIANT!!! Adam is groovin' his arse off... And Bono? Great as ever. Yep, nothing bad I can say about it.

Odd, it was only after getting AOL in 1995 that I learned that 'apparently' Zooropa isn't as beloved as Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree. I was taken aback by the hatred some have for the album. Maybe, in the US, as they didn't tour it here... maybe it didn't "speak" to as many as it could have... to me... it has remained a favorite.

1) Achtung Baby
2) The Joshua Tree
3) Boy
4) Zooropa
5) The Unforgettable Fire

Or at least that is how they rank for me at the moment. (Subject to change with my mood.)

What do I like about Zooropa:
-Johnny Cash
-Zooropa, Numb, Lemon, Stay (my personal favorite), DGPFYCC, The First Time (very underrated) and even Some Days....... and one of my all-time favorites: Dirty Day
-The great bass guitar lines (Especially Dirty Day)
-Bono's best voice ever (so f*cking high)
-MacPhisto (Lemon, DGPFYCC)
-The tour (best tour ever)
-The history (made during the ZooTV tour)
-The 'weird' sound of the album
-not well-known to the big audience
-No overplayed songs
-It's a style which completely changed the music world (first AB, then Zooropa)
-The title (how do you come up with it: Zooropa) (I know: Zoo Station - ZooTv - Zooropa)
-The album fits; every song fits with the other songs

And that is why Zooropa is their best album, closely followed by ATYCLB

ALL great points that I agree with for the most part.

I am Jeff-phisto... "look what you've done to me..."

agreed about Edge, he is completely in 'scientist' mode on this album, i looooove the distortion bit on Stay, would love to see him play that part live. and the fact that Lemon is done from a guitar, that swirly sound, completely awesome

Yep. I can get pretty close to that tone with my LP or Explorer, into a whammy pedal set at two octaves up into a the Boss SD-1 into my Boss TR-2 tremolo with a square wave setting and deep depth and some delay... et voila... MIDNIGHT... IS WHERE THE DAY BEGINS...

This interpretation of Zooropa really changed my point of view on the album: Please login or register to view this link. I never thought of it as an spiritual album before.

What does this album not have?

great sounds. lots of emotion, meglomania, rock n roll, johnny cahs singing over a weird electronic sounding bass line

i think all 2 often when U2 have experimented, they've done something interesting and fallen short. But with Zooropa they experimented but got it spot on! a great album i love it

Zooropa is brilliant. The title track is so damn fine, quality lyrics, great music. Babyface is a bit mysterious, which is why I like it. Numb is just perfectly done and captures the media effect perfectly. Lemon is simply brilliant as is the video. Stay, we all know is awesome songwriting, kudos to the angel hitting the ground at the end, nice. Daddy's Gonna Pay is good, Some Days is again, some great lyrics, The First Time is beautiful, Dirty Day is ace to listen to on a dirty day and finally, The Wanderer, which is lyrically and musically brilliant.

I don't know why people dislike the album, it's fantastic. Well, I love it anyway.
